Over the last couple weeks we have brought you all-new information on Namco Bandai’s upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 release, Soul Calibur 2 HD Online. Today, Sept. 12, we share with you the complete exclusive interview with Project Soul which details why Soul Calibur 2 was chosen opposed to Soul Calibur 3, which version the HD remake is based upon, and we delve deeper into the game’s online mode and character roster.
[Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted prior to the official announcement of Spawn and Heihachi joining the game’s roster for both versions.]
Examiner: What was the reasoning behind the selection of Soul Calibur 2 for an HD remake opposed to, say, Soul Calibur 3?
Project Soul: SOULCALIBUR 2 was our first multiplatform title in the series, and is one of the most popular installments, as well as a personal favorite. Also, SOULCALIBUR 1 has already been ported to iOS and XBLA, so I felt it was a natural progression.
Examiner: Heihachi was shown in the debut trailer. Will he be an exclusive character to the PS3 – as he was exclusive to the PS2 version of SC2 – or will he also be playable on Xbox 360?
Project Soul: This time, Heihachi can be used on both platforms! Now, fans who bought the version that didn’t contain Heihachi can finally try him out! I recommend using him.
Examiner: Is Spawn going to return in SC2 HD Online? If not, why so?
Project Soul: Spawn will also return, so fans can finally realize their dream match-up of Heihachi vs Spawn. The original animator that created the animations for Spawn at the time said he was extremely pleased with and confident in the results. You can see the cool character animation for yourself when the game comes out.
Examiner: Many are disappointed that SC2 HD Online will not be released on Wii U or PS Vita. Why is the game skipping these platforms?
Project Soul: We have always been willing to try any platform if there is enough demand. Project Soul doesn’t have any attachment to a particular console; only the desire to achieve the greatest results possible for the platform chosen.
Examiner: What are some of the online features we can expect from SC2 HD Online? Will there be online leaderboards, rankings, or lobbies to view other fighters?
Project Soul: Rank Match, Free Match, and Leaderboard features are included. We hope you enjoy the opportunity to play SOULCALIBUR 2 online for the first time.
Examiner: Which version of SC2 is SC2 HD Online based on – PS2, GCN, or Xbox assets?
Project Soul: The core coding isn’t much different between the versions, so it’s not like SC2 HD Online is based on any particular version. The basic game system is recreated pretty accurately, and I’m sure that fans of the original will approve of the results.
Examiner: Aside from improved visuals, has the game received any other upgrades? Like a smoother frame-rate or upgraded fighting mechanics?
Project Soul: With the power of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the frame rate is incredibly stable. For the versus game play mechanics, the emphasis was on recreating everything exactly as it was in the original. The biggest addition is definitely the online vs mode. This wasn’t available in the original, so I’m sure the fans will be pleased to see what it’s like to play the game with today’s online technology implemented.
