Naked violist Matthew Thomas Mglej, arrested in Portland
Multnomah County Jail

The naked violinist who was jailed in Portland, Oregon, must now face the music in court. The nude fiddler is in legal trouble after refusing orders from police to put on his clothes, Fox News reported Sunday.

The naked violin player was seen playing his instrument in front of a courthouse in downtown Portland on Friday Several witnesses reported the incident to police, the Portland Tribune reports. When confronted by officers, he was not cooperative. He refused to walk to a police car and officers had to carry him. The New York Daily News reports that he was booked into booked into Multnomah County Jail but was since released.

The nude violinist told police his name is Matthew T. Mglej and that he is 25 years old but police don’t know if that is his real name.

The naked musician will now have to face charges of indecent exposure in court. Police clearly did not want to arrest him. They said they warned him several times to put on clothes but he refused and refused to leave the public view.

Portland hosts the World Naked Bike Ride but police don’t enforce the law against indecent exposure as long as participants stay on the designated route. That ride draws 8,000 nude cyclists each June.

The city's official code reads, ""It is unlawful for any person to expose his or her genitalia while in a public place or place visible from a public place, if the public place is open or available to persons of the opposite sex."

The Multnomah County Jail Web site shows that Mglej was released on his own recognizance on Saturday. He is described as a 6’4” white male weighing 190 pounds. His photo is posted above.

There is no word on whether the nude violin player has had prior run-ins with police but obviously authorities do not believe Mglej is a threat to public safety as he was released a day after he was arrested.
