Imagine minding your own business and you see someone riding a bike naked. You would do a double take. Now imagine about 2500 people, in various stages of undress riding . Your reaction is what most folks would have. Today August 25 2013 was the Philadelphia Naked Bike Ride.
It kicked off just after 4:30 p.m. from Penn Treaty Park. 2500 bike riders, most in some stage of undress rode around the city. There were gawkers and people who were there just to see what was going on. Some riders had body paint on. Not everyone was naked. There were some that were fully clothed. The idea, organizers said, was to have people undress to what they felt comfortable with. The event showed off every flaw in peoples bodies, so those that were naked have to be self assured.
In the days of video cameras, people would snap photos and put them on Facebook or Youtube. The ride almost ran into a snag, as the bikers blocked northbound traffic just out of the starting gate. The police showed up, and left. "What are you gonna do,lockup a thousand naked people"? asked one cop. A family stopped from South Philadelphia were embarrassed. "Look at all the naked penises " said the shocked driver who did not want to give her name. "My children see this, Oh my God".
The ride circled city hall , and went a few miles to the end near Germantown Ave. There were gasps and people stopped what they were doing, trying to confirm what they saw and then trying to look again. What you do on a public street can be photographed and thousands of people whipped out cell phones or cameras to take photos. Not everyone was on a bike, some rode skateboards, others tried to walk. There were no arrests . Look at the PG slide show to get a glimpse of what went on. There is no nudity.
