"Octomom" Nadya Suleman has been charged with welfare fraud and the mother of 14 could be facing more than five years behind bars for failing to report an income of almost $30,000. “Nadya Suleman, the woman famously known as ‘Octomom,’ was charged Monday with welfare fraud after failing to report nearly $30,000 in earnings,” said the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office according to a Jan. 13, 2014, CBS News report.

In accordance with the CBS News report, the Los Angeles Times also reports that “the mother of 14 is accused of failing to report nearly $30,000 in income — earned via appearances and royalties from her self-pleasuring porn video — when she applied for welfare in the first half of last year.”

On Monday, Los Angeles County prosecutors charged “Octomom” Nadya Suleman with one count of aid by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury by false application for aid. She was not arrested but is to appear in court on Friday, where prosecutors will seek a bail of $25,000.

According to a L.A. Now report, “the criminal complaint alleges that Suleman illegally received $16,481 in welfare payments — $6,667 from the CalWorks financial assistance program and $9,814 from the CalFresh food aid program — during the first six months of 2013.”

Nadya Suleman gained international attention in January of 2009 when she gave birth to octuplets that she had conceived via in vitro fertilization. Michael Kamrava, the fertility doctor who had transferred 12 embryos to Nadya Suleman eventually had his medical license revoked for not exercising “sound judgment.” Nadya Suleman had already six other young children, was unemployed, and on public assistance programs.

Monday’s welfare fraud charges against “Octomom” Nadya Suleman are a continuation of the 38-year-old mother’s struggle to support her 14 young children. “Suleman, who collected food stamps to feed her 14 young children, filed for bankruptcy in May, but the case was tossed out of court because of paperwork issues.” Besides food stamps, 38-year-old Nadya Suleman danced topless at a Florida strip club last year and released her adult video in June of this year.

As Nadya Suleman says, she “dreams of building a business ‘empire’ that will pay for food, shelter and college educations for her 14 children. She ultimately hopes to become a role model for other women facing major struggles.”
