I had the pleasure of speaking with Mimi Collins, Director of Communications for the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) about the upcoming Social Media Mashup to be held at the Hyatt Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, PA. This two day event will feature a “virtual” non-stop series of interactive workshops, learning labs and an impressive mix of social media “gurus” and recruiting professionals bringing their knowledge and expertise to the NACE Social Media Mashup.
This is the inaugural NACE Social Media Mashup and according to Ms. Collins, “the biggest function is connecting employers who are interested in hiring new college graduates for employment and internships with their counterparts on college campus…the Career Center people”. Mimi reports that “NACE research indicates that although college students have embraced social media, most have not utilized it effectively and appropriately as a job search tool”. Although NACE doesn’t serve the students directly they have been a vital part of the employer/career counselor connection since 1956.
Mimi indicated that "as more employers clearly are embracing social media to establish their presence and broadcast job opportunities it is important for the students to understand how to manage their own social media presence and learn how to use it in their job search (specifically how to research employers)".
So who is this event designed to attract? It is for college recruiters who want to use social media as part of their college recruitment effort or those that have used it and realize that it’s an evolving platform and want to know where it’s heading. It’s also for companies that are interested in hearing the experiences and best-practices of organizations like Ernst & Young, TMP Worldwide and NetApp who have taken the lead in utilizing social media to improve ROI and will be present to share what they have been doing with social media and how it relates to college recruiting.
If you wish to attend this groundbreaking event please go to the link provided here. If you are unable to attend and wish to have up to the minute updates, follow the Mashup and comment through your own social media presence. Twitter users can follow the hashtag #NACEsocial or connect with NACE on twitter @NACEorg for additional information. There will also be a NACE Social Media Mashup presence on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.
I would like to thank the NACE team for bringing such a groundbreaking event to the city of Philadelphia. There will be a follow up interview in the upcoming week with Mimi Collins, who will be offering first hand information and insight from the Mashup.
