Mystic Genesis is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards revealed today from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert expansion set "Gatecrash."

Counter target spell. Put an X/X green Ooze creature token onto the battlefield, where X is that spell's converted mana cost.

Previewed in an article by Brian David-Marshall on MagicTheGathering.com, Mystic Genesis is a powerful two for one spell. We suspect Mystic Genesis makes a creature token instead of being a creature with flash and the ability to counter a spell like Mystic Snake or Draining Whelk because of the large number of flicker effects currently present in Standard, namely Restoration Angel.
David-Marshall sees Mystic Genesis in the top curve of an Evolve deck packing Cloudfin Raptor, Experiment One, and Drakewing Krasis. By the time you've hit five mana, an opponent's spell costing four or more will evolve your creatures and drawing several cards off Fathom Mage.
Because Mystic Genesis produces a creature token, you'll be able to copy it with Populate cards such as Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, and Growing Ranks.
