Need for Speed Shift racers will be treated to a rather beefy (and required) 239 MB update when firing up the game in their PS3 or 360 consoles today. That size indicates much more than mere patches or fixes, and was issued this afternoon without fanfare or announcement.
Curiously, upon launching the title with the new update installed, a box appears inside the main menu directing you to visit www.needforspeed.com for more info, though we've found nothing under their Support or Downloads areas. A few members inside EA's forums are also raising some eyebrows, complaining of invisible cars inside their virtual garage, as well as sound glitches.
The timing is interesting considering the Exotic Pack DLC is set to release on March 18th, and just today EA announced the Need For Speed World closed beta.
We have an email out to EA's PR team,. but in the meantime we're speculating that perhaps the DLC is being preloaded, or some promotional content related to NFS World has been installed.
We'll update this article as soon as we know more! Has anyone else unearthed clues?
UPDATE: Reader PuziMauws pointed me to this thread at GTPlanet which is dedicated to discussing the 1.03 patch, and there's some solid speculation happening there.

Hope to get some more info about this patch indeed. For me it did not fix anything, just got a little worse :(
Sound still cracking, major FPS drop during races with many opponents and can't see the icons in My Cars list or Rims selection screen.
If EA is looking for new BETA-testers, count me in. Things like this should not be happening.
anybody have an idea on what the update contained ????????
@joff81: Still no details anywhere, I'm looking around constantly.
Hi,
Check here gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=126388
It seems some cars are modified and laptimes are faster now.
Not checked yet myself. Mailed support about this patch, let's see what they reply.
Thanks for the GTplanet forum link, I update the article to reflect it!
