MySpace sort of fell off the map when it lost a major battle to Facebook a couple years ago for social networking dominance; yet, it still is alive, adding 1M users since December. After being sold off the hands of News Corp. for $35M by Irvine based Specific Media, including Just Timberlake, the vision for the website and network has been re-invigorated.
If Facebook specializes in the personal space of website users, MySpace excels in the sharing and discovery of creative content and music. That’s one thing that has been a distinguishing factor for the social networking site.
In an age of new media, digital content is quickly becoming a commoditized channel for advertisers, creative artists and digital media moguls like Specific Media. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MySpace will launch a web series titled Wolfpack of Reseda. It’s a dark comedy that will consist of eight-minute episodes sponsored by Kia motors and developed by Roger Mincheff.
Web series will most likely become a major trend. Developing media channels on the internet with such digital content attracts wider and younger audiences as the internet has become a preferred venue for their viewing pleasure.
No doubt MySpace has distinguished itself as a media platform even with the help of Facebook. If they are to grow they will need Facebook’s help, and based on their reasoning, Facebook stands to gain from the growth of MySpace’s community.
