My Turn: Will Jason Chaffetz protect the innocents?

Well, folks, the geniuses in Washington, D.C. put us, not themselves, behind the economic eight-ball with this ridiculous ‘Sequester’ (automatic budget cuts scheduled to take effect this coming Friday) and, like it or not, they (the geniuses) are the only ones who can get us out from behind that ball.
So, where will the good people in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District stand after Friday?
What, if anything, will the honorable Congressman Jason Chaffetz do to protect his constituents and every other Utahan from budget cuts that (this year alone) will?

  • Cut 90 teacher and teacher’s aides positions increasing class sizes when students are shifted to other classrooms
  • Eliminate funding for 9,000 students
  • Cut funding for 20 schools
  • Kill jobs for 70 teachers, teacher’s aides, and staff who work with children with disabilities
  • Eliminate 80 work-study jobs for low-income students who are trying to work their way through college
  • Cut college aid funding for 530 low-income students who are trying to educate themselves out of poverty
  • Eliminate Early Head Start and Head Start funding for approximately 400 children who will forever lose the opportunity to get the early educational foundation that is so critical to success in later life

The madness starts in just four days.
So what is Congressman Chaffetz prepared to do to protect his innocent constituents who don’t get a $174,000.00 annual salary or have access to the best health care insurance in the world or have taxpayer-supported offices in Utah and in Washington, D.C. or enjoy a hefty expense account or a have a bevy of well-paid staffers . . . like he does?
Every thinking person in America knows that deficits need to be cut and the public debt must be paid down but who created the deficit and the public debt?
Was it those 90 teachers and teacher aides who are 4 days away from losing their jobs?
Or the 9,000 students who will no longer be funded to go to school?
Or the families that rely on those 20 schools that are scheduled to lose federal funding?
Or the 70 teachers, teacher’s aides, and staff who will no longer be able to work with children with disabilities?
Or the 80 college students who’ll have to give up their chances to work their way through college?
Or the 530 college students who'll have to drop out?
Or the 400 children, innocent little children, who will never again have an opportunity to get the right start, a head start, in their educational lives?
No . . . emphatically NO!
The people who created the deficits and accumulated the public debt are people just like Jason Chaffetz . . . the men and women we elected, and trusted, to represent our best interests . . . the same people who now refuse to take responsibility for their stunning incompetence.
These are the people who don’t have to worry about the Sequester because their fat paychecks will continue to be honored, their benefits will continue to be paid, their expense accounts will continue to be funded, and their offices, staffs, and mailing expenses will all be paid for . . . in full by us.
The elected representatives we support are perfectly willing to lay their mistakes off on the innocents: teachers, teacher’s aides, college students, and little children.
Is that what Jason Chaffetz will do?
Will he cast those good men, women, and children aside or will Jason Chaffetz protect the innocents?
Time will tell.
In the interim, Jason should know that we’re all watching.
Doncha think?
