My Turn: Senator Mike Lee is on the wrong side . . . again!

Poor Mike Lee . . . wrong again.
The junior Republican Senator from Utah was dead wrong in his opposition to the Violence Against Women Act two months ago and, now he’s gotten it wrong on the so-called gun control debate.
Mike Lee, admittedly, is not known for his courage or intellect so it doesn’t surprise me that he wouldn’t dare speak the truth but would in fact hide behind the Republican party line on guns.
You know the Republican party line on guns, don’t you?
It goes like this: Hey, Mike, don’t be stupid! Don’t give up gun lobby campaign contributions by telling America the truth . . . that background checks and limits on assault weapons and multi-round magazines will only make the nation safer.
No, Mike, we want you to scare the daylights out of your constituents in Utah and anyone else who might be listening by telling the party lie: that background checks and proposed limits on war weapons and multi-round magazines are the first steps in the federal government’s plan to take away America’s estimated three hundred million guns.

Don’t believe me?
Okay, don’t take my word for it . . . here’s what the Republican Senator said in an Email he sent to me today, an Email that quotes his recent op-ed piece in Utah’s Deseret News: “As Congress begins to consider new gun legislation this spring, it’s important for citizens and lawmakers to keep two basic facts in mind.
Hmmmmm . . . Mike Lee is about to tell us two facts. How about that?
The honorable Senator Lee continued with, “Gun control isn’t about guns – it’s about control.
Is this Lee’s first fact or just rhetoric?
We'll answer that in a moment but first, you should know that Senator Lee continued with, “And the right to bear arms isn’t about the arms – it’s about the right.
His second fact or more rhetoric?
Let’s let the Oxford Dictionary answer that question for us . . . okay?
Oxford says that a fact is a thing that is indisputably the case as in, Senator Lee lacks the courage to tell the truth . . . a fact that becomes clear when he speaks about gun control.
Oxford also says that rhetoric is language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content as in all we hear about gun control from Republican Senator Mike Lee is empty rhetoric.
Where is Senator Lee’s proof that gun control is about control?
He didn’t say.
Where is Senator Lee’s proof that the right to bear arms isn’t about the arms – it’s about the right.”
Again, he didn’t say.
Hmmmmm.
Senator Lee’s Deseret News piece continued with, “These facts may be ignored in Washington, D.C. where there is no hunting to speak of, and every government building is protected by armed guards. They are not lost on the American people, however.
Did a Unites States Senator just say, These facts may be ignored in Washington, D.C. where is no hunting to speak of?
Are you kidding me, Senator Lee, or are you just stupid?
I hate to be the one to tell you this Senator Lee, but there is NO HUNTING in Washington, D.C., unless you’re talking about human beings hunting other human beings with guns you don’t want to control!
Senator Lee’s Deseret News op-ed piece essentially regurgitates the NRA/Republican Party line, spewing the same old, hackneyed line of bull designed more to protect the profits of gun manufacturers, distributors, and dealers than to protect the lives of Americans.
Bull like:

  • Gun control won’t work because the federal government has trouble delivering the mail, can’t run Amtrak trains on time, and wastes billions of dollars every year. Really, Senator Lee? The United States Senate doesn’t work either . . . it fails to protect and serve the people of America . . . should the U.S. Senate therefore be disbanded?
  • The best police and prosecutors can’t eliminate crime so why bother to even try to eliminate thousands upon thousands of gun deaths in America? Okay, Senator Lee, would you then say that since the justice system can’t eliminate crime, we should stop bothering to arrest bank robbers, child molesters, muggers, rapists and other criminals?

Lee’s convoluted logic then shifts gears as he says, “We have the Second Amendment, ultimately, for two reasons.
“The first is history’s lesson that government can’t be everywhere, all the time. So free citizens must fill in the inevitable gaps to look out for ourselves and for each other
.”
Really, Senator Lee?
Since the government can’t be everywhere, all the time, on every commercial flight, Senator Lee, in the absence of air marshals, would you advocate arming airline passengers to look out for themselves and their fellow passengers?
If you’d like to learn more about how United States Senator Mike Lee thinks about gun control and gain some insight into what he thinks is the best course of action to protect Americans from gun violence, you can read Senator Lee’s Deseret News op-ed piece by clicking on: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765625858/Second-Amendment-Historys-l....
After you’ve read his piece you may want to ask the following two questions.
Question number one is for you: Is Republican Senator Mike Lee’s argument on gun control fact-based, logical, reasonable, or in any way good for the victims of future Newtown massacres?
Question number two is for Senator Lee: Why do you care more about the Republican Party line on guns than you care about thousands upon thousands of innocent men, women, and children who are wounded, maimed, and killed by guns on the mean streets of America each and every year?
You can ask him at: 316 Hart Senate Office Building - Washington, D.C. 20510 - Phone: 202-224-5444 - Fax: 202-228-1168 or on Twitter: @SenMikeLee
Think he’ll be able to come up with an answer?
