A brief history: My local newspaper has a near-fetish to publish anti-gay submission editorials. I drop this response in all the publications. I don't know that it makes it differences -- to date I've received no responses (am I so damning that I'm untouchable, or am I so wrong I don't deserve response?). Please feel free to use the following in any debate you find yourself in. Enjoy!
You are idiot to the highest possible nth degree to think homosexuality is a choice. What is it about the word consent that you can't grasp? Why does the love of two consenting adults bother you?
A few biblical considerations:
The fact that you can no longer sell your daughter into marriage or trade her for cattle means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that your father can no longer apply a dowry (worthy payment amount) to your daughter for the courter's father to pay so as to marry said female means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that marriages (in America) are now rarely arranged by the parents means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that marriages aren't arranged to establish allegiances of state or property means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that you cannot kill your non-virgin bride on your marriage night at her father's doorstep means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that you can't have limitless numbers of women and have hundreds more concubines means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that you can't forcibly marry a 13- or 14-year-old girl means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that we don't force a rape victim to marry her rapist, or she be stoned to death, means we have already redefined marriage.
The fact that marriage, ceremonial and otherwise, existed long before Christianity or Judaism means you have no claim on what marriage is.
Don't give me this "you can't redefine marriage" garbage. It's woefully arrogant and lacking any merit at all. If you really think same-sex marriage is going to affect yours, then it's obvious you're hunting for an excuse and looking for a quick scapegoat.
Marriage in America is a governmental contract for the benefit of spouses in times of recognizing legal relationship for events such as visitations, taxes, property disputes, custody, inheritances upon death, and the like. You dolts are all forgetting that, regardless of the ability to marry, homosexuals are still out there doing their homosexual things. The only thing marriage will do is allow them the same rights and tax benefits as you in your straight marriages are eligible for. Funny how in every country that has thus far allowed gay marriage, or as I call it -- marriage, the skies haven't fallen nor has the ground opened up beneath their feet.
Let us not be ignorant to the fact that churches don't perform marriages. Churches perform weddings. A marriage is a permit you apply and pay for at your County Clerk's office to say your marriage legal under law.
Last I checked, we are ruled as a secular, democratically-elected, constitutional republic, not a theocracy. If you want to live under a theocracy, move to Iran or Egypt. Otherwise, it might be best to recall what your Jesus said about what is Caesar's (hint: it had to do with respecting the law of the land).
We must also not forget that the United States is not a Christian nation. It was stated blatantly, and made law, in the Treaty of Tripoli that was signed by President John Adams, and ratified unanimously in 1797 by the US Senate (aka, our founders), "[T]he Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."
Now onto real science. You say, "Homosexuals go visit your local livestock farmer / rancher and you will observe all farm animals are of the heterosexual basis." Actually, you couldn't be more wrong. Other than at farms where mating is driven by human implements, homosexuality has been found in thousand of species of animal all across the globe. Some animals who mate for life have been in homosexual pairings for the entirety of their lives. One great study that followed an albatross couple found that one female in the pair would, every year, go mate with a male to become pregnant, then go back to her female partner where the two females would raise the offspring. This went on for years. And study after study after study has found that homosexuality is developed while still in the uterus long before birth. This is a factor of epigenetics.
When you use your religion to deny the basic rights of others, yes, you are still a bigot. And a little reading wouldn't hurt either.
You know what? No one gives two rips what you think of homosexuality. Richard Dawkins had it right when he claimed "[t]he God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." But I side with Christopher Hitchens who argues that the God of the New Testament is undeniably more pathological than the OT god because "at least the Old Testament doesn't threaten to punish the dead." The fact of the matter is that every single study ever done has confirmed that sexuality and its roles are ingrained in us before age three and our sexual orientation is imprinted into genetic code while in-utero. The fact that you hide behind your bible as your source of the worst kind of morality in the face of falsifiable, testable, empirical evidence only exposes your bigotry, intolerance, and hatred for those who don't fit YOUR petulant and narrow standard of who goes in your club and who deserves to be an outsider. Don't like gays for no ethically defensible reason? Fine, keep it to yourself. Believe it or not, no one cares. I'd keep my disdain for religion to myself if religion weren't so effective at tearing apart civil society. Ironically, if we would just treat everyone as equals rather than second-class to your narrow definitions, our news wouldn't be as congested as it is about gays in our culture, much like how we no longer are treated to the breaking news of a black person joining a Major League Baseball team. Get a grip.
