My silver pieces have a metallic taste

I've received several questions regarding a metallic taste resulting from use of silver flatware or hollowware. I'm not an expert on this subject but I have come across two instances where metallic taste was evident.

The first was the result of cleaning agents left on pieces - especially chemical dip cleaners. Thorough hand-washing with a gentle dishwashing soap will help with this problem.

The other issue was worn plating on silver plate pieces, exposing the base metal below the plating. Something in the base metal compound could be causing the metallic taste. The only solution to this would be having the piece re-plated.
