Wouldn’t it be great if you had your own personal assistant for your pet? Someone to keep track of follow up veterinary appointments, trips to the groomer, doggy play dates and timing on medications so you don’t forget the important things. Later this year, you should be able to go online and do just that.
A California couple is working on a new application that will help you keep track of appointments and important information. My Pets on Time will also enable your pet care providers – from vets to groomers to pet sitters and dog walkers – to log on if you give them access to check out important information about your pet.
“Last year, we had one of our dogs in at the vet and we asked for a reminder call about a follow up blood test,” says Mark Leonard, founder of the company. “They told us their system was just set up to do reminders for annual check ups. We started checking out the various apps available to monitor your pet’s care and didn’t find a program that did all we wanted it to do.”
The mother of invention
Leonard was in luck. His wife Julie is a computer programmer and she started to work on a program aimed at covering the variety of appointments a pet owner may need to schedule. She also wanted to make important information about a pet accessible to pet care providers. That would include special care, dietary, medication and behavioral information a groomer, pet sitter or dog walker should know.
“As a subscriber, you can set the accessibility of your information. You could set it up so your vet sees everything but your dog walker is only able to access information about behavior, dietary information and other basics,” adds Leonard. “You could make your vaccination records available to providers like groomers and doggy day care that need to know if your pet is up to date.”
The goal is also to make this a community so that pet lovers can connect and share. The Leonard’s have rescued greyhounds as part of the family and also foster greyhounds. He sees this as a wonderful way for them to connect and share information with that community. A later version will also include a pet amber alert system for when a pet goes missing. Here are some of the features of the program.
- Complete pet care records and documents.
- Unlimited number of pets.
- Database of pet breeds and services.
- Track and share key information.
- Flexible reminders.
- Transfer records to new owner/guardian.
- Operates on web and mobile devices.
- Online storage and backup of your information.
- Social networking.
- Live conference calls.
Supporting My Pets on Time
Leonard has set up a campaign on Indiegogo to help them raise some start up funds for development. The program is set up so that donors receive various packages that include a year’s license for free, a lifetime license and multiple licenses at various donation levels. Once they are up and running, you will pay a fee to join and an annual fee after that. However, it keeps information for all of your pets in one simple location.
“There are so many families with multiple pets. This is a great tool to keep track of everything without forgetting appointments,” adds Leonard. “Instead of creating an app, it’s a full online portal for people to use. We are also wanting to team up with shelters and rescues for them to offer this to adopters. We’d split the sign up fee with the organization.”
