Face of the 1889 Liberty dollar (heads)
Most of the instant games that I play I scratch off with my 1889 Liberty dollar, so some readers may be curious about this coin.
My grandfather was a collector of coins and was always happy to pass some of them on to his children and grandchildren if they seemed interested in the hobby. I managed to pick up a number of interesting coins that were once part of his collection, including some very old Greek coins that I suspect are far older than he was – and Grampy was born sometime very early in the twentieth century, 1905 or thereabouts. Cleaning out the basement of a such a collector can be a chore, but having this kind of heirloom usually makes that packrat in the family someone who is quite appreciated after he's gone.

Back of the 1889 Liberty dollars (tails)
He gave my mother a box of old silver coins which she passed on to me a few years ago. The clink of silver money is nothing like what you hear with modern coins – it sounds like real money! I selected this one for scratching off my lottery tickets because dollars are hefty coins, and because liberty is one of the things that people are looking for when they play the lottery.
It's a good enough coin to use for just about any scratch card than I encounter, except ones that have teensy weensy little boxes that should be scratched one by one, taking care not to scratch their neighbors until it's time - so far, the only ones I need a backup coin for are the Cashword games.
