By my eye, this morning dawns into a misty Lā`au Kū Kahi, in the month of Makali`i, in the rainy season, Ho`oilo. We are still celebrating the Makahiki. This is the first of the Lā`au nights. Vines planted in the Lā`au nights will tend toward woodiness, but banana and trees will develop strong trunks. This is a time for gathering medicines and preparing them.
This evening, the sun sets into Lā`au Kū Lua.
Fishing is still fairly good. In Hilo, higher low tides bracket the day, being around 20:08 Wednesday night and 21:03 tonight. Lower low tide is around noon - at 12:06, and will even out at 0.0 ft. Higher high tide was about 05:04 this morning, and lower high tide will be around 17:52 this evening, reaching 1.0 ft.
The Prince Kūhiō Civic Club Hawaiian Moon Calendar is a handy tool for tracking the Hawaiian lunar days. Edited by Kalei Nu`uhiwa, it is well researched and conveniently laid out. It is available in Hilo through Basically Books, or on-line from the Civic Club.
A saying about harvesting herbal medicine:
"E uku `ia ke kanaka ki`i lā`au, he luhi kona i ka hele ana." The man who goes to fetch medicinal herbs is to be paid - the trip hemakes is labor. The patient's `ohana always paid the person who harvested the herbs for the medicine. If payment was not made, and the herbalist was unhappy, the medicine would not work. People who are compensated fairly for their work cannot grumble, because the negativity will return to themselves!
