This book portrays family at its best. My Grandmother's Knitting is by Larissa Brown. Larissa has combined many top designers introduction to knitting through autobiographical stories and 22 projects. My Grandmother's knitting celebrates the person who shaped the knitter you have become.
The stories shared are short and compelling. You may know the designers through previous books or patterns of theirs. Among the designers are Ysolda Teague, Jared Flood, Pam Allen, Teva Durham and Wendy Bernard.
The warm and memorable stories the designers shared are a wonderful part of the book. Then there are the patterns of socks, sweaters, cowls, fingerless gloves, slippers and more. I liked the Olina socks by Emily Johnson (I am a sock hog). The design was inspired by a Hawaiian lei in honor of where her great-grand parents resided. Ysolda Teague's Fiddler's Mitt's are dainty yet sturdy. I thought the word sturdy when I was looking at the photograph. Upon reading the introduction for the fingerless gloves, she described the gloves using the same word. These speak my name, I will knit these. Cowls are so popular now and Pam Allen hasn't let us down with her Chickadee Cowl pattern. Worked with a cable in the color cypress (lovely). You might find you love wearing it indoors to compliment an outfit.
I am thankful to my Grandmother, who taught me to crochet and cross sitch and to my Mother, who taught me to knit and do needlepoint. Let's pay this forward and pass along the passion of knitting in honor of the person who influenced us. This book will be a welcomed gift for the Knitter who has inspired you. A perfect gift for the holidays.
