Chickens were squawking and elephants were trumpeting while a Ranger drove a wheeled coffin among them. It was Press Day at Burn 2, Burning Man in Second Life®.
Burn 2 doesn't open until this Saturday, October 1, 2011, but on Thursday the Burn 2 sims were opened up for members of the press to explore the various art builds and to test vehicles at Burn 2's DMV, the Department of Mutant Vehicles.
And Mutant they are! Avatars in egg-shaped vehicles found themselves squawking like chicks while the inflatable elephants roared. There were two coffin vehicles, one wheeled and the other with wings that other avatars can hang onto like stunt flyers of an earlier age.
Few of the vehicles were mundane. Yes, there are bicycles, motorcycles, and other vehicles that we can recognize from the physical world, but there are also giant spider vehicles and winged insect vehicles, even a rubber duckie wading pond vehicle.
All of them and more are available for your avatar to use for exploring Burn 2. You can rez them at any of the bike rack rez stations you'll find in various locations around Burn 2 - the picture with this article shows what they look like. Click the arrow to cycle through the selections.
You can also rez vehicles at the gas pumps at the DMV yard. Second Life members can teleport to it at
