It's not too late to plan your Memorial Day getaway, and if you are a theater lover, there are plenty of fantastic new shows to catch while you're there. The only real difficulty may be in narrowing down your choices to a select few to fit into your trip! Whether you are a devotee of musicals or you prefer serious dramas, there are several options available in the new Broadway season.
For musicals, the hot tickets in 2014 are undeniably Neil Patrick Harris in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Audra McDonald in Lady Day. Both feature a return to the boards from Broadway regulars who are leaving it all on the stage inhabiting dramatic divas. It will be interesting to see how the typically likeable Harris (of How I Met Your Mother and Doogie Howser fame) will take on the grungy transvestite famously portrayed by John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cerveris in the much-smaller Jane Street venue. As for McDonald, reviewers are already raving about her take on the self-destructive Billie Holiday, and the show has been extended for additional performances beyond those originally set in the limited run. If you saw Audra recently at the Atlanta Symphony's annual gala concert, you know that a performance by this star is a real event.
As far as the dramatic plays, Daniel Radcliffe is sure to sell tickets during his stint in The Cripple of Inishmaan, as the former Harry Potter has already proven himself twice to New York audiences, once in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and more recently in Equus. Another star-studded show is The Realistic Joneses, starring Marisa Tomei, Toni Collette, Michael C. Hall, and Tracy Letts.
Go ahead and plan your trip now! You can find reasonable hotel rates at spots located near the theater district, including Element New York, and Delta Air Lines is offering roundtrip flights for around $300.
