Must See Show of the Week – Matt & Kim @ The Observatory

Who: Matt & Kim, Papa

Where: The Observatory

When: Friday, Mar 8th

Tickets: Sold Out – Check Craigslist!

I really hope you already have tickets for this show. Matt & Kim bring Brooklyn boogie (and sometimes some Harlem Shake) all across the world and guarantee major rump shakage before the night is over. Their drums and synth duo makes for some of the most energetic music available to humans, barring the creation of a new genre that somehow transmit actual adrenaline into listener’s hearts. With their latest album, Lightning, the duo has grown into more than a party band with observational music, as they strike a chord with wasted youth by yearning for more than what media and society tell us. Their live shows are the apex of fun, with both Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino getting out of their seats and into the crowd repeatedly.

The duo made their own success with a groundswell of support from both college radio and anyone given the chance to watch them live. The same can be said for openers Papa, a band dedicated to giving audiences something different every time they take the stage. Lead singer Darren Weiss told me that they have been “pretty lucky in the big room there at The Observatory,” and with half a dozen shows over a year in Santa Ana, their following has also bloomed in Orange County. The combination of Matt & Kim’s fire and Papa’s zen will make for a perfect storm of good times and high energy. While the show is sold out, keep an eye out for an extra ticket or bug your friend to take you instead of their significant other!
