In what has been a meteoric rise across the world, Alt-J is bringing their indie heat all the way from Leeds to Los Angeles. After slaying Coachella and playing a small gig at The Observatory around the same time, the four-piece nerd-rock wunderkinds are back at the Palladium in Hollywood for two shows, one of which is sold out. You might want to buy the tickets for Wednesday night as soon as your mouse will click, as any spare ticket will be immediately purchased by any of the thousands satisfied music lovers destined to be thrilled tomorrow night. Their live act is even more chilling than their sparsely-produced album “An Awesome Wave” suggests and I considered their daytime slot during Coachella’s first day my “Set of the Weekend,” a title I don’t throw around lightly.
Opening for the Brits is Royal Canoe, a Canadian outfit convinced that live instruments are better than vapid backtracks. What a novel concept! Their approach to organic music making is evident within the first few minutes of their newest album “Today We're Believers,” an electronic journey through the mind of The Waking Eyes’ Matt Peters. The collaboration required to build sound this large is quite impressive and the subtlety still found when the music machine spits out their album is remarkable. A stellar choice for an opening band.
