Muslim reformer to speak in D.C. area on 1/19

Islam reformer and former jihadist Dr. Tawfik Hamid will be speaking on January 19, 2011 at the Potomac Institute in Arlington, Virgina. His website describes him thus:

"Dr. Tawfik Hamid, is an Islamic thinker and reformer, and one time Islamic extremist from Egypt. He was a member of a terrorist Islamic organization JI with Dr. Ayman Al-Zawaherri who became later on the second in command of Al-Qaeda. Some twenty-five years ago, he recognized the threat of Radical Islam and the need for a reformation based upon modern peaceful interpretations of classical Islamic core texts."

On January 19, 2011, from 2-4 pm, The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies (www.potomacinstitute.org), will present a lecture by Dr. Tawfik Hamid, the Institute's Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism. Dr. Hamid will speak on the "Reformation of Islam: The Challenge and the Future."

In his talk, Dr. Hamid will discuss his view of the need for a reformation within Islam, as well as the challenges and obstacles to reform. He will also address methods and tactics that he argues can facilitate the process of reforming and modernizing the Muslim world.

Dr. Hamid is no stranger to controversy: a onetime member of the Islamic radical group Jamaa-Islamiya, he has focused in recent years on combating radicalism and has argued for a fresh interpretation of the Quran to counterbalance radical teaching. Dr. Hamid is the author of Inside Jihad and has traveled the world lecturing against terrorism and radicalism. He holds a medical degree in internal medicine and a Master's degree in cognitive psychology and educational techniques.
