Musicology 101 is an event that has been held once a month at Cloud 9 Lounge in downtown Hartford. With a unique twist that makes it stand out above all the average music showcases by not only highlighting the talents of the musicians but also recognizing the masterminds behind the scenes – the producers.
The event was founded by musician Steede Chinan and business partner producer G-Whiz Bueno. Together they have come up with a dynamic formula to allow artist to showcase their talents as well as network together in the name of music.
This month an unbelievably talented all-star line up was showcased. The producers were founder G-Whiz himself along with veteran Ralphy O and Young C. They mixed it up adding a new comer to the producer’s lane Brandon Alexander.
The musicians were some of Hartford’s finest setting off the show with one of the best poets in Connecticut Mind Evolution who was recently featured on Poetz Corner TV; proving that the true origin of music came from poetry. She was followed by rapper Criss Lyric who specialized in catchy chant-like hooks like “We Rise” and “Cherish the moment”. Talon Haynes brought balance to the evening with his smooth R & B sounds along with the angelic voice of Laree Salmon that sent chills through your body. The sensational Ru Williams took complete control of the crowd performing his hot new single “Twitter Girl”. Closing out the night bringing it back to the ladies V-Ness rocked the microphone representing true lyricism proving that woman do it best.
All of the producers had their own styles Brandon Alexander’s beats had an underlined reggae feel with a mixture of rock, hip hop and dance creating a sort of futuristic new world sound that could hypnotize your senses and inspire any writer. While Ralphy O had a way of starting you off slow and then making you bop your head uncontrollably to his fresh symphonic sounds. Young C took us back to the 80’s mixing the track, “I’ve got the power” by the artist Snap! showing us that a great producer can make the old become new again. G-Whiz stayed true to the East Coast showing everyone where Hip Hop truly came from.
The venue was packed elbow to elbow but held under control by the host of the evening Hot 93.7’s E-Boogie. Her bubbly yet sassy personality and electrifying energy moved the crowed along by her command. DJ QT kept the crowd bouncing helping everyone to become completely lost in the air of the hour. While, photographer extraordinar Robert Cooper added to the evening making everyone feel like they were at a Hollywood event.
Musicology 101 is a must attend event! You have to be there in the flesh to experience the magic. Earning the title 101 by showing people how to network together and build a following for each other from the grass roots. It has created a culture of positive energy, great vibes and support amongst fellow artists in the community which is long overdue. If you have not attended a session make sure you catch the next one on February 11th at Cloud 9 Lounge or for the first time in West Haven on February 16th at JP's Ultra Lounge.
