Musicians at NAMM 2013 needing a wide range of help can go to the MusiCares at booth #4713, and pick up information regarding assistance offered by the organization.
The MusiCares Foundation offers programs and services to members of the music community.
These include emergency financial assistance for basic living expenses, such as rent, utilities and car payments; medical expenses including doctor, dentist and hospital bills.
Assistance for getting psychotherapy and treatment for HIV/AIDS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, hepatitis C, cancer, and other critical illnesses is also available.
Professional musicians with addiction issues can also be assisted through the MusiCares MAP Fund.
Established in 1989 by The Recording Academy, sponsor of the Grammy Awards, MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need.
Its services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality.
The organization also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community.
Those at NAMM with substance abuse problems are urged to please attend a recovery meeting in the Safe Harbor Room at NAMM. 12-Step meetings are held daily, at 9am an d6pm daily, except for Sunday.
Many recording artists have supported the recovery services offered, including Stephen Tyler from Aerosmith.
Located in the Hilton Hotel Coronado Room on the 4th floor, addicts and those in recovery are invited to attend. Friends of Bill W. are welcome.
Services are offered for musicians in cities across the country.
Music professionals in Southern California needing discounted eye care can contact Musicares. In cooperation with Dr. Cynthia Boxrud, MD, FACS, MusiCares referrals have a chance to access complete eye care, including advanced testing and eyeglass prescriptions, of only a nominal co-pay.
Free comprehensive orthopedic care to uninsured music professionals is also available through MusiCares at the offices of Stetson Powell, who specializes in orthopedics and sports medicine.
Dr. Scott Powell, a former member of Sha Na Na, now a orthopedic surgeon, in partnership with MusiCares, has created the Pierre Cossett Center in Burbank, California, named in honor of Pierre Cossette and his extensive contribution to The Recording Academy, and the annual Grammy telecast.
Applicants unable to afford the co-pay may apply for coverage through MusiCares Financial Assistance Program.
Professional musicians concerned about their health who are uninsured are also all invited to attend "Resolution Revolution!" a program where musicians can found out how healthy their body composition is. Dress in comfortable gear an find out where you stand.
Be checked for body fat percentage, muscle mass, water weight and bone mass percentage. Attendees can get a 30-minute body-changing workout with celebrity trainer Omar Lopez. Pro musicians wondering where they stand with their cardiovascular health, may attend the Resolution Revolution, and receive full cardiovascular screens with an FDA approved BPro measuring device are also available.
MusiCares also offers nationwide educational workshops covering a variety of subjects, including financial, legal, medical, and substance abuse issues, and programs in collaboration with healthcare professionals that provide services such as flu shots, hearing tests, and medical/dental screenings.
The MusiCares MAP Fund allows access to addiction recovery treatment and sober living resources for members of the music community. Staffed by qualified chemical dependency and intervention specialists, MusiCares Safe Harbor Rooms, supported by the Bohemian Foundation, offer a support network to those in recovery while they are participating in the production of televised music shows and other major music events.
MusiCares holds weekly addiction support groups for people to discuss how to best cope with the issues surrounding the recovery process. The MusiCares Sober Touring Network is a database of individuals across the United States who can take music people to recovery support meetings while on the road.
