Theatre lovers will have to chance to engage in a little horror and a little fantasy with offerings from TUTS Underground and Broadway Across America in October.
LIZZIE with TUTS Underground
TUTS Underground’s season opener reveals a rock maven quartet in their “killer” rock musical, Lizzie. The legend of Lizzie Borden, a leading double murder suspect, has her story retold with Carrie Manalakos as the axe-wielding character. The show runs Oct. 10-20 in Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall.
Manalakos, from Broadway’s Momma Mia and the national tour of Wicked, will join onstage Carrie Cimma as Bridget, the Borden Family maid. Cimma’s national tour credits include Sweeney Todd, The Wedding Singer, Oliver!, and The Full Monty. Both women have played in previous workshops of Lizzie, which earned Cimma a Drama Desk Award nomination.
Partnering with them on stage will be Natalie Charle Ellis as Lizzie’s sister Emma and Courtney Markowitz as Alice, the neighbor. Ellis previously played in the national tour of 9 to 5: The Musical and brings extended off-Broadway and regional theatre experience. Markowitz played on Broadway in Jekyll & Hyde and was last seen at TUTS in the national tour of the same thriller. She also played in the national tour of Spring Awakening.
The Underground series is a new venture and legacy for TUTS, Houston’s largest nonprofit musical theatre company. Forged from the guidelines of “No revivals – No dead authors – No boundaries,” TUTS Underground features productions that are edgy, captivating and occasionally a bit risqué.
Tickets, which start at $24, are available at www.tutsunderground.com.
