Musical production of 'Beauty and the Beast' coming to San Jose

The award-winning worldwide smash hit Broadway musical, "Beauty and the Beast," is coming to San Jose to touch the hearts of theater-goers in the Bay Area once again. Although the musical isn't set to hit the stage until March, it will make a great Valentine’s Day gift addition (hint, hint), and it is indeed something to look forward to – this is one of those romantic, fun-filled events that even a fortune teller couldn’t predict any better for the future.

Disney’s "Beauty and the Beast" is the classic story of a young provincial town woman, Belle, and the Beast, a young prince trapped in a spell cast upon him by an enchantress.  If Beast can learn to love, and be loved – before time runs out – the curse will end and Beast be gone, revealing a version of his former self. The lesson Beast must learn must of course take place before time runs out or he and his household are doomed for all eternity.

Broadway San Jose's production of Disney’s "Beauty and the Beast" features the animated film’s Academy Award®-winning score with music by Alan Menken with lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, with additional songs with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice. The book is written by Linda Woolverton.

The original creators of the Broadway production are together again for this new touring production. The play is directed by Rob Roth and choreographed by Matt West. Costume design by Ann Hould-Ward (Tony Award®-winner for her work on Disney’s "Beauty and the Beast"). Lighting design by Natasha Katz, with scenic design by Stanley A. Meyer, sound design by John Petrafesa Jr. and music supervision by Michael Kosarin.

According to Director Rob Roth, “It has been wonderful to bring the entire original design team back together to work on this new production of Beauty and the Beast. As a director, it is rare to have the opportunity to revisit your work fifteen years later."

Roth hopes he’s grown and developed as an artist along with his collaborators and can bring his 15 years of experience to this new production. “We have remained very close as a team over the years of producing the show around the world, and it has been so much fun getting together to re-explore and re-invent the show for this new NETworks tour. The theme of ‘Beauty’ is about seeing past the exterior into the heart of someone, and this is reflected in the design for the show, which is about transparency and layers, seeing past one thing and into another.”

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has become an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 21 countries.

Plan for your family event or date night early. "Beauty and the Beast" will be performing at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts March 6 through March 11, 2012. For those unfamiliar with the storyline or if you're into 3D movies, Disney's version of "Beauty and the Beast" is in theaters now. Or, you can hold out for the musical (live is always better).
