Musical, fitness lessons learned with Muntu's summer drum program for kids

Drum classes are a fun way to be musical, active and get fit all at the same time, and companies like Drum Alive and Pound already know it. While FLOTUS Michelle Obama continues to explore new ways to get children to fulfill the motto "Let's Move," Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago is ahead of the curve. Chicago parents can help kids get fit, learn about new cultures and take advantage of their musical skills with this summer's seven-week drum program from Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago in the University of Chicago's Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at 915 E. 60th St.

The seven-week program "United We Drum" is open for kids and teens ages 8 to 14. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., on Saturdays from July 12 to Aug. 23. All classes are taught by master drummers and include field trips to other drumming schools.

While drumming may look like it's just a technique for the hands or sticks, paying closer attention to drummers shows how much their thighs, back, biceps, triceps, calves and feet are also involved. It just may seem like too much fun to realize how exercise is incorporated into playing percussion instruments.

The drum classes will combine physical activity with education, teaching students about various cultures and the history of rhythm. At the end of the program, students will gather for Muntu's United We Drum Family Day where they'll team up with master drummers to show what they've learned.

United We Drum Day is free and open to the public. The musical event will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Sun, Aug. 24. For class registration information, contact Neffer Kerr at 773-241-6080 or visit
