The Holy Spirit rolled into Bowie this weekend on a tour bus. Families, with everyone from little kids to grandma and grandpa, came out in force to worship and rock Sunday night. The Only Name Tour, featuring Big Daddy Weave, Chris August, and Unspoken, filled Cornerstone Assembly Church with excited fans.
People jumped to their feet the moment Unspoken burst on stage and remained standing their entire set. The band took a moment to speak to the crowd in between songs, the music interspaced with spiritual stories or the inspiration behind a song. The singer reminded the audience, “If you read the bible and pray, the Lord will enter your life.”
Chris August, a Cowboys fan, and the crowd of Redskins fans had some fun with each other before the set, all missing the big game between their teams that night. The crowd had a great time clapping along to his music, music with a message that is. Chris spoke to the crowd about faith. He told them how “Believing the love of Jesus is holding them” is all they need, and to, ”Stop wandering around asking for signs”. He urged them to stop wasting their lives waiting for this major sign, just knowing that God is there is all they need. Reminding them, “It is by Faith I feel You.”
The audience was back on its feet again when Big Daddy Weave hit the stage. Their hands raised in the air, the people were feeling the Holy Spirit. The band was having a good time too, smiling and laughing with one another while on stage, all while spreading the word of the Lord. Mike Weaver, lead singer of the band, was gracious enough to sit down with me backstage before the show and have a chat. (Mike Weaver interview)
Mike spoke during the band's set of his passion for the World Vision organization. With the birth of each child in his family, he and his wife “adopted” a child from World Vision as well. One day he actually got to go to Tanzania and meet his “adopted” son and his family. Commenting on how this African family that had so little gave so generously to him while he was there, he urged the crowd to, “Respond to the voice of the Holy Spirit.” Video packets from World Vision were passed out. He told them the story of how this child had been given a new name. People were calling him Boy Face. Mike did not understand why they would be using this term, but it was explained to him that the name translated into Better Ending. He received this new name because he had come to know Jesus.
Prior to the show there was a VIP meet and greet where fans got a chance to ask the performers some questions. One little girl, Desere’, received a special treat when Chris August sang Happy Birthday to her. He spoke to the crowd about his skateboard accident last year and incurring a severe brain injury, coming back from such a struggle. He called the brain injury the hardest part of his life and gave thanks to the power of prayer and the healing it brought to his life. He credited God for bringing him to where he is today. Reminding them, “The Holy Spirit is never going to lead you astray.”
