Music to Make it Better is an organization that was started in the summer of 2011 by a pair of college students who were looking for a way to make their summers in between school years meaningful. They schemed up a plan to combine two of their passions: making music and creating a positive difference in their communities. They reached out to a group of friends—who they knew from high school and university musical theater and choir productions—to put together a charity cabaret concert that would benefit an organization of their choosing.
What the creators didn’t expect was that their production would sell out its venue space, and that the audience would leave at the end of the show still wanting to hear and see more. The attention and proceeds from last year’s production directly benefited the It Gets Better Project, and the raving reviews convinced the group to put produce a show for 2012.
Music to Make it Better’s 2012 charity cabaret concert will be held on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28 at 8 p.m. at the Orchard United Methodist Church, located at 30450 Farmington Road in Farmington Hills, Mich. Presented by the alumni and friends of Walled Lake Western Choirs, the group will perform songs from West Side Story, American Idiot, Jason Mraz, Urinetown, Michael Buble, Florence + The Machine and more.
This year’s cast consists mainly of college students from Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Grand Valley State University, Michigan Technological University and Oklahoma City University. The vocalists will be accompanied by instrumentalists playing piano, drums, guitar, violin, viola and cello. The acts range from intimate a cappella numbers to high-energy, fully choreographed musical theater songs, which all tie into the show’s theme: Love is Louder.
Music to Make it Better 2012 is directly supporting the Love is Louder Movement through financial donations and raising awareness. Love is Louder was started in 2010 by The Jed Foundation, MTV and Brittany Snow as a way to support those feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone. The movement inspires hundreds of thousands of individuals, communities, schools and organizations to work online and with the media to build positive emotional health. The movement focuses on promoting acceptance and empowering others to support their peers with the message, “Love is louder than…”
Tickets for Music to Make it Better's charity cabaret concert are $10, and $8 for students, senior citizens and children. Donations of any amount are appreciated and will be accepted at the performance. More information is available at facebook.com/musictomakeitbetter and twitter.com/MTMIB.
