Music Missions - Hana Kim (New Music)

Through an eclectic mix of funk & pop a soulful sultry Korean American voice strikes through to create a rich harmony of soul and love. As you listen to Hana Kim’s single “Mexico,” let me share with you her past, her dreams and the loving heart she carries that impacts lives and souls through missions.

Like many other singers, Hana Kim has been singing since her youth. Hana Kim started off singing songs in church and playing classical music taught by her aunt, whom was her teacher. However her passion for music didn’t really start until she started learning how to play the piano by ear. From that point on, Kim was inspired and used her creativity to write her own songs. However for Kim, music was in the background. It wasn’t until college that her love for music became much more pronounced. Hana Kim states, “When I went to college, I realized how much I really wanted to do music, even though I was majoring in Business.” That was a turning point in Hana’s life. From that point on, Hana graduated from UC Irvine in three years, in which, she performed her first show at Genghis Cohen—a popular LA venue.

Hana Kim is multi-talented; not only does she perform music in shows but she also has a love for God and missions. Hana Kim is a well-rounded individual who uses her music as a tool to love and bless God.

"I don't see my faith and music as separate aspects of my life. The gospel has changed my life completely. I'm so thankful to know that an all-powerful God loved me so much to come and save my life. Thus, music is more of a means. It is a means to love & thank him, while blessing and sharing the same love to others around me" Kim.

This is definitely true for Hana. While on missions in Paraguay, Hana saw the manifestation of her music as a “ministry tool.” She states, “It was so cool, because I didn’t go there with the mentality of a performer, I was just like, ‘God use me where you want me to be used.’ ” With that little prayer, God used her all-right. Hana was able to use a Spanish Praise & Worship book she made the year before. She also taught a youth choir, created and participated in Praise & Worship, sang in the streets and was even invited to perform and interview on a TV show.

This mission trip was a wonderful experience that truly impacted Hana’s life:

“I realized just how powerful music is; in terms of really encouraging people and helping people. As I perform I think the greatest feeling is when people tell me, ‘I can relate to that song.’ A lot of my songs may not directly be about God, but the songs are about life and your walk with different things in life. [Thus,] I believe your faith can speak to that constantly.”

When Hana Kim is not performing you can find her experiencing the diversity and arts in LA. What Hana loves the most about LA, is that fact that there are so many people here pursuing a dream. Hana Kim’s dream is to be able to travel and tour in other parts of the world, while continuing to bless.

Although Hana Kim expressed a bit of apprehension about being an Asian American and pursuing her passion of song, I believe that Hana Kim’s voice breaks the boundaries. At the end of the day, it is about your talent and the love you have inside of you that will impact and change the world.
