This Monday is Epiphany, the “twelfth day of Christmas,” which commemorates the visit of the Magi to present their gifts to the infant Jesus. The Church of the Advent of Christ the King will mark the occasion with the celebration of a High Mass and procession. Director of Music Paul Ellison has prepared a stimulating selection of music for the occasion, which will be performed by the church’s resident choir Schola Adventus.
The Mass setting will be by Tomás Luis de Victoria, specifically the setting based on the thematic material from his motet “Trahe me post te” (take me with you). The music for the Introit will be the chorale prelude “Behold, he appeareth,” by the Anglo-Canadian organist Healey Willan. The postlude will be the fourth of the eleven chorale preludes composed by Johannes Brahms and published as Opus 122 near the end of his life. The hymn set by this particular chorale prelude is “Herzlich tut mich erfreuen” (my inmost heart rejoices). The Gradual for the service will be Peter Warlock’s choral anthem “Bethlehem Down,” set to words by Bruce Blunt. The Nativity Anthem will be “Here is the little door,” Herbert Howells’ setting of a text by G. K. Chesterton.
This service will take place this coming Monday, January 6. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 261 Fell Street, between Franklin Street and Gough Street. The church may be contacted at 415-431-0454 if there are any further questions.
