Music Academy of the West announces schedule of summer festival events

As was announced last December, the 2014 Summer School and Festival at the Music Academy of the West will be honoring legendary mezzo Marilyn Horne in her 80th year. Horne, who celebrated her 80th birthday this past January 16, has been Director of the Voice Program since 1997; and she is also an Academy alumna (’53). The highlight of the season will be a new production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, whose leading role was so significant in Horne’s career that she even performed excerpts on an episode of the television situation comedy The Odd Couple.

This new production will receive two performances in August. Staging will be by Juilliard faculty member David Paul, and James Gaffigan will conduct the Academy Festival Orchestra. Horne herself will co-direct this summer’s gala with Carol Burnett. The full schedule of events for the Festival has now been announced as follows:
