Museums offer free admission this Saturday

Museums offer free admission this Saturday.

Participating museums and cultural venues around Atlanta celebrate Museum Day, Saturday - September 26, 2009, by throwing open their doors and inviting you and a guest to come in and enjoy their general admission exhibits for free. Smithsonian Magazine sponsors this nationwide event and museums and cultural venues across the United States participate on a voluntary basis. The Free Museum Day General Admissions pass allows a visitor and a guest to enjoy general admission exhibits only and does not include special exhibits, shows, or movies.

What to do to get your free admission:

On the Internet, visit the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day web page and decide which museum/ cultural venue you would like to visit by clicking on the find a venue link. To find venues in your area, type in your address and a map will then pop up highlighting the nearest museums/ cultural venues with links to their websites.

Once you have selected the museum/ cultural venue you would like to visit on Saturday, click on the admission card link at the top of the web page and fill out the requested information. You will need to decide at that time which place you would like to visit and fill in the name of the museum/ cultural venue in the blank box provided.

Click submit, and your Free Museum Day General Admission pass will pop up on your screen and will need to be printed.

On Saturday, take the printed Free Museum Day General Admission pass with you to your museum and present it at the entrance for free admission for you and for your guest.

Enjoy the exhibits!

It is mentioned on the webpage that only one Free Museum Day General Admission pass will be accepted at the entrance from each household. While it is not mentioned on the web page, it may be a good idea to bring some form of picture identification with you, along with the Free Museum Day General Admission pass printout, in case the museum entrance staff ask for it. Not every museum in the Atlanta area has agreed to participate in Museum Day so remember to check the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day webpage under find a venue before you go. You can also find the museum's hours of operation on that same link.

Another feature on the Museum Day web page is the link to view free podcasts that highlight tours, lectures and fun facts about participating museums and cultural venues across the United States.
