‘Muses’ in Fullerton, Pete Seeger and pals in Laguna & San Diego

Gather seven women together. They’ll talk, to be sure, but what will they talk about? “The Muses,” which runs through Jan. 29 at Hunger Artists in Fullerton, doesn’t go “down there” in the vernacular of “The Vagina Monologues,” which the company staged four years ago. What the show lacks in a unifying theme it makes up for in originality; in the end it has more substance than shape.

The evening is more or less a collection of monologues that touch on such topics as motherhood, childhood, sisterhood and of course love, with a lot of banter in between. It’s imaginatively directed by Jill Johnson, who scripted with six others, notably OC actors Amanda Riisager and Kaitlyn Ralston; standouts in the energetic ensemble include Callie Prendiville, Karen Harris, and Mia Danelle. How sweet the sound: “Lonesome Traveler,” running through Feb. 5 at Laguna Playhouse, offers musical portraits inspired by such folk music immortals as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Lead Belly and others… "A Hammer, A Bell, and A Song to Sing," through Jan. 29 at San Diego Rep, is inspired by the music of Seeger… “Pure Pete Seeger,” a short documentary on the singer-songwriter-activist, is included on the just-released DVD “Bill Moyers: Amazing Grace,” a history of the hymn.

Hot tip: The cast of Mysterium Theater’s “The Laramie Project,” opening Jan. 12 in Santa Ana, includes three actors who made the Best of OC Theatre 2011 list.
