Museo Italo Americano - One of the best museums in San Francisco is also free

Located in the quiet solitude of Fort Mason Center, one of San Francisco’s best art museums welcomes all visitors at no cost. It is here in Landmark Building C where the Museo Italo Americano sets up shop, promoting the culture and heritage of Italian and Italian-American artistry.

Five reasons to visit the Museo Italo Americano

It’s a Great Date Place

The ambience is casual yet peaceful, making it an ideal place to bring a date. You’re not likely to encounter a crowd here, leaving you and your guest with ample opportunity to discuss the personal effects of the art you’re admiring. And when you’re done, you can head over to Book Bay next door and share a cup of Blue Bottle coffee or take a walk around picturesque Fort Mason.

Lots of Parking

Fort Mason Center is essentially half-parking lot. Parking rates are fairly low as well, especially on weekdays. It would be cheaper to drive and park than take MUNI, though you may still want to do the latter for environmental reasons (we live in San Francisco, after all).

A View of the Bay

Have you ever stood at the edge of the Bay by Herbst Pavilion? Fort Mason offers an expansive view of the San Francisco Bay, from the Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz.

The Culture

The Museo Italo Americano is the first museum in America dedicated solely to Italian and Italian-American culture. The Museo also throws cultural events, presents lectures and facilitates educational activities like Italian classes. It's a cause worth supporting (they accept tax-deductible donations).

The Art

Of course, the defining characteristic of any museum is its contents. The Museo Italo Americano is best paralleled to an exhibition at the de Young or Legion of Honor, albeit somewhat smaller. The Museo’s current exhibition, a tribute to artist John Grillo (as featured in our last SF Italian Events weekly), features a number of his paintings and mixed-media pieces. It’s a healthy collection too, as the museum consists of four segregated rooms.

And did I already mention that it’s free? For more info on the Museo Italo Americano, visit their website and find them on Facebook.
