MUSE/IQUE, known for its inspired, unexpected live music events curated by noted Artistic Director/Conductor Rachael Worby, continues its “Uncorked” series on Monday, February 24, 2014, 7:30 pm, with “Spring/Within,” spotlighting Aaron Copland’s iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring on the dramatic stage of A Noise Within’s state-of-the-art venue located in the former Stuart Pharmaceutical building, a historic, mid-century modern masterpiece in East Pasadena.
Worby leads members of the MUSE/IQUE orchestra in the original 13-piece arrangement of Copland’s ground breaking composition, a ballet commissioned by Martha Graham and described by National Public Radio as “one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the century,” capturing “the essence of an ideal America, one of open fields and endless possibilities.” Worby adds a modern lens to Copland’s work with electronic texturing by Grammy-winner Mike Simpson (aka EZ Mike of the Dust Brothers).
The program also includes fits + starts for electronic music with live cello, commissioned by LA’s Hysterica Dance Company by cutting edge composer Anna Clyne, composer in residence for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra who has also written commissions for the LA Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall and Minnesota Orchestra, among others. Animating both pieces is choreography by acclaimed dance creator Kitty McNamee, artistic director of LA’s Hysterica Dance Company, performed by dancers Sara Silkin, Christian Brower and Marlon Pelayo. A complimentary pre-concert wine reception for ticket holders begins at 6:30 pm followed by the 70-minute concert.
"This is Appalachian Spring ‘unsprung,’” says Worby. “We are shaking up Aaron Copland’s piece with fresh choreography and electronic layers for a modern look and sound inside the space at A Noise Within. The theatre seamlessly melds contemporary architecture with a historic façade to create a thoroughly modern space all its own, much like what we are doing with this program. Our musicians, playing a wild collection of instruments, team with dancers to revive the visceral energy of the music in this stunning performance space that literally brings the action right to the audience."
