Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of talk about the deer Little Orphan Dani from Connersville, Ind. Dani was set free by an unknown person the day that the DNR was scheduled to come out to kill her and we Pagans are sure that the Great Mother was thankful for little Dani’s rescue. Sadly, a deer who was rescued in Manitoba was shot and murdered in front of the family that rescued him. Although it is understood that a wild animal should never be a pet, there must be another solution to deal with animals that have been tamed and made into pets by humans when they should not have been. Murdering the Great Mothers children can not be the only way.
This fawns story began when members of a Manitoba Hutterite colony found the small creature in a ditch on the side of the road with its umbilical cord still attached. Out of love an compassion they brought the orphaned fawn into their sanctuary. They hand-d the deer, loved it and treated it as a member of their community and called him Bambi.
On Feb. 2, 2013 Manitoba Conservation officers murdered Bambi on one of the colony streets while his foster families watched in horror. Evie-Lynn Maendel said "they shot him right in the front lawn and there were quite a few of us watching from the windows, I saw him fall and he was thrashing around for about a minute. It was hard to see for everyone.” Bambi was still a fawn, just under a year old, when he was murdered.
The deer was more than just a wild animal and had become a member of the community. Although I agree that the fawn was being treated as a pet, fed incorrectly, and was far to tame and used to humans, there must be a better way to deal with a situation like this. Murdering Bambi in front of adults and children that loved and cared for him seems not only extreme but inhumane. The accounts of the deer trashing around after being shot turns my stomach. This deer knew and trusted humans, can you imagine what he was thinking in last moments alive?
We can not allow the Great Mothers children to be murdered like this. This was not Bambi’s fault, his treatment and raising was human error. There are animal sanctuaries, zoo’s and other solutions to issues like this. Murder is not the way.
Little Orphan Dani's rescuers are not out of the woods just yet, don't forget about the petition to drop the charges against the Counceller’s, Little Orphan Dani Counceller’s Facebook page, the Facebook fan page, or the fundraiser for the legal defense of the Counceller’s. The Pagan community in the Pacific Northwest stands behind you and sends you our love and support.
