Soulful outlaws Murder By Death are gracing the Golden State with three shows in its southern half next week. While not supporting any new material, the back catalogue of cowboys, devils, zombies, and archetype storytelling should satisfy any fan, living or dead. Their most recent offering "Good Morning, Magpie" carries the Murder By Death tradition of learning something while being entertained, all while dancing the night away. Three shows in three days makes for an exciting west coast swing and also means you can get your fill before the quartet heads north and ultimately out of state lines.
Electric cello, bar-stomping beats, and a baritone voice to die for encapsulate the MBD experience and fans living near Costa Mesa, San Diego, and LA's legendary Echoplex have a place to commiserate with fellow wandering souls. With over five albums worth of material and enough brilliant tracks to make any band jealous, expect everything from saloon stories to epic poetry condensed into four minute chunks of magnificence.
For the uninitiated, it is nearly impossible to provide another band to draw a comparison but instead those familiar with great storytelling (literary or musical) will figure it out real quick. Johnny Cash, Radiohead, and a few other heavy-hitters have been used to describe their sound but nothing explains how four Midwestern folks create a new blend of classic themes and modern sound.
Tickets for the Costa Mesa, San Diego, and LA shows are still on sale and only the latter is "18 and over" while legal drinking age is required for entry to the first two. Less than twenty bucks guarantees a great time and openers The Builders and The Butchers will bring their sea-shanty style to satisfy the salty crowd before they get to sink their teeth into Murder by Death.
