Munchkins in Corpus Christi set to be a part of the The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is headed to Corpus Christi on Thursday, June 10, 2010 and it's picking up 'Munchkins' along the way.

Several local students from Munro Ballet Studios in Corpus Christi will be performing live on stage with the professionals from the tour. As part of the professional production, The Wizard of Oz, cast local kids to play the 'Munchkins' on stage. The kids were required to be between the ages of 8 -13 years old, and due to costume limitations, they couldn't be taller than 5 ft. nor were allowed to weigh more than 100 lbs. You can see them this Thursday during the one time only performance set to be at the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium at 7:30 pm.

This production of the greatest family musical of all time, The Wizard of Oz, is based on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s celebration of the 1939 MGM movie. It is  presented with breathtaking special effects that will surely sweep the Corpus Christi audience away right from the moment that the tornado twists its way into Kansas.

Featuring the classic songs by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, “Over the Rainbow”, “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” and “Merry Old Land of Oz”, along with the beloved characters and the local 'Munchkins,' THE WIZARD OF OZ will have the entire family captivated as they travel down the yellow brick road for an unforgettable evening at the theater. This production is sure to stir up wonderful childhood memories from the parents in the audience as well as introduce new experiences to a new generation of musical theater lovers which will no doubt prove why it is a classic stage production with timeless appeal.

Director Nigel West, choreographer Leigh Constantine and set and costume designer Tim McQuillen-Wright utilize the glamour and elegance of art deco Hollywood as the visually stunning technicolor backdrop for THE WIZARD OF OZ. Dorothy, Toto and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow are transported “Over the Rainbow” to adventures in Munchkin Land, the Haunted Forest and the Emerald City.
