A preliminary set of data e-mailed from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides some information about mumps cases in the United States. These are unofficial figures and will not be certified by the public health authorities at the various states and the CDC until 2011. The data provided us is the latest available, through week 25 of 2010, June 26, 2010.
The mumps outbreak in the New York City area continues with little change. Upstate New York and New Jersey appear to have had a decline in the numbers of new cases since mid April, the fifteenth week. Over 80% of the cases of mumps in New York City have been reported since that date.
Keeping in mind that these are preliminary numbers, New York City has reported 927 cases of mumps in 2010 through June 26, 2010. Upstate New York has reported 644 and New Jersey has reported 257. There have been 2,106 cases of mumps reported to the CDC nationwide and 87% of those have been from New York and New Jersey.

The outbreak in Nebraska appears to have subsided with 28 cases reported. Iowa continues to report cases from its outbreak with 30 cases year to date. Michigan and Texas are reporting cases nearly every week for a total in 2010 of 35 mumps cases each. The remaining 150 reported cases nationwide are distributed among most of the other states.

Mumps is preventable through vaccination. The CDC has this to say about the efficacy of the MMR vaccine in preventing mumps:
Mumps vaccine, which is included in the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) vaccines, is the best way to prevent mumps. Mumps vaccine effectiveness has been estimated at 62-91% for one dose and 76-95% for two doses.
The CDC publishes an extensive website about mumps.
