The annual "Show of Shows" performed by the world-renowned String Bands of the Philadelphia Mummers Parade will travel to Atlantic City on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. Boardwalk Hall will be alive with a dazzling display of the vibrant, sequin-studded costumes and intricate harmonies of the String Bands continuing a tradition that began in the 1930s.
“The Show of Shows is a beloved tradition that has entertained generations since the 1930s and is an extension of the high-energy routines seen on New Year’s Day,” said Marty Good, president of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association. “It offers an exclusive chance to catch the String Bands’ talented and creative performances indoors.”
The 16 String Bands who will perform at the “Show of Shows” include the 2013 First Prize winner, Fralinger String Band, as well as the Aqua, Avalon, Broomall, Duffy, Durning, Ferko, Greater Kensington, Greater Overbrook, Hegeman, Polish American, Quaker City, South Philadelphia, Trilby, Uptown, and Woodland string bands. For champion Fralinger String Band, 2013 marked the first top prize for the band since its 2003-2010 winning streak.
The String Band Division is one of five divisions that perform each year in the Mummers Parade. String Bands are comprised of reed, string (including banjos and base violins), and percussion sections, with the predominant instrument being the saxophone.
