Multi-talented musician Paul Hertz will be playing an organ recital at the Saint Petri Lutheran Church (804 Grand Avenue) in Story City on Sunday, January 27. Among Hertz's many projects are playing bass trombone for the Ames folk rock dance band Mumford's, playing keyboards for Jordan Mayland and the Thermal Detonators, and being involved in the Ames Choral Society. (He will be singing in an upcoming cabaret show called "Down the Hobbit Hole"). He is also a composer and serves as the organist at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames.
Hertz's recital, presented by the Randall Area Fine Arts Council, will be performed in two halves and feature music from six centuries, as well as original compositions, plated on a pipe organ. The first half of the recital, "Music for the Church Year", will begin with music for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany; continue with music for Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost; and close with music for Trinity Sunday, All Saints Day, and Thanksgiving. The second half of the recital, "Five Hundred Years of Organ Music", will feature organ works by Bach, Buxtehude, Rheinberger, and more, presented in chronological order. Hertz's will close with the original composition "Fantasia for Organ", as well as several original organ improvisations.
The recital is free and open to the public, though a free will offering will be collected. The recital is scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a reception afterwards. For more information on the event, call (515) 733-5039.
