The Dec. 6 incident was reported to police through a 911 call at 1:03 p.m., a department spokeswoman said. She said police were aware that there were multiple people injured, but couldn’t confirm the number of individuals or the severity of their injuries.
Photos taken at the scene show the car, a white sedan, careened through multiple displays after flying through a front window. Ultimately, the vehicle came to rest in one of the aisles.
A source said the driver of the vehicle was an elderly woman who appeared to have lost control of the vehicle.
Initial reports indicated that a person may have been trapped under the car, but authorities were unable to confirm that information at press time.
Police said they are still investigating whether the incident was accidental or if detectives suspect any criminality.
A telephone message left for a Trader Joe’s spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
