The Rockford Register Star is in Rockford, IL, and is the metropolitan area's primary daily newspaper. In 1979 there were two Rockford competitors, The Register Republic, that was founded in February 15, 1855, that was the newspaper through Jan. 6, 1873. The Morning Star was founded on March 20, 1888. Gannett was the owner at that time and they announced that they were selling the paper to Fairport, NY- based GateHouse Media.
The Register Star was the fifth highest circulation Illinois newspaper as of Sept. 2006. At that time the circulation was 70,300+ the 163rd largest in the United States.
