INTERSECTIONS: A New America Arts Festival now through March 7 at DC’s Atlas Performing Arts Center is a multi-ethnic, multi-genre, multi-generational line-up of more than 30 artists and cultural institutions.
Performances range from a world premiere by Grammy-nominated local hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, to a concert by legendary folk singer and activist Tom Chapin, the Washington Savoyards’ production of Scott Joplin’s ragtime opera, “Treemonisha”, and a concert by the Children’s Chorus of Washington.
The six-venue festival offers:
-- Reverb, an a cappella sextet, sings gospel, jazz, and original tunes.
-- Jason Garcia Ignacio/City Dance Ensemble perform “The Mountain”, a dance fusion of east and west by Filipino choreographer Jason Garcia Ignacio. It was commissioned by Kennedy Center.
-- In “The Bridge of Bodies”, Haitian-American Kathleen Gonzales portrays 16 characters in her play about self-discovery. There will be a benefit for Haitian earthquake relief and recovery.
-- Jazz at the Intersection: Grabielismo Productions' Bemcha Latin Jazz Band.
-- The GALA Hispanic Theatre presents Paso Nuevo. “The Legend of Izquic” is a documentary-fiction film tracing the lives of local teenagers who form part of an at-risk theatre collective in Columbia Heights, DC. They tell about their own inter-American emigration into the United States, their visions for a changing tomorrow, while an ancient Mayan legend unfolds.
-- Northeast Senior Singers and Delta Players. H Street community elders perform stories and songs, including highlights from “Porgy and Bess” on the 75th anniversary of opening on Broadway.
-- “New Dawn” international music is performed by DC-based jazz singer Imani and her trio, which the “Washington Post” called "the answer to jazz fans' prayers."
-- “The Prep School Negro”, a film takes a poignant look at the life of a young man who, through a scholarship, moved from poverty to prep school. Followed by a discussion from students from DC independent schools, including Edmund Burke School.
The festival also showcases literary readings, film screenings, and displays of visual art.
Audiences may participate in workshops, discussions, and informal performances.
