The 2010 MTV VMA Awards show looking back to last year's show for the drama of the moment that Kanye West grabbed the microphone from 19 year old country star Taylor Swift and proclaimed that Beyonce had the best video ever.
Early in the September 12 show, host Chelsea Handler made reference to West's crass move and demonstrated a swift kick-to-the-groin defense for any award winner who had a speech interrupted.
Taylor Swift and Kanye West each performed a song based on that jaw-dropping pop-culture moment. Swift responded with sweetness and West admitted he was an a-hole.
Taylor Swift opened her number with a video of Kanye West stealing her moment at last year's awards show. Taylor Swift looked serious and somber as she sweetly sang a ballad which included the lyrics; Thirty-two and still growing up, who you are is not what you did, you're still an innocent.' The lyrics were gentle and had a wisdom beyond the 20 year old songwriter's age.
Kanye West closed the show boldly, wearing red from head to toe. He started by playing some note on the keyboard and then sang his penance, with the lyrics. 'I'm so gifted at finding what I don't like the most / so I think it's time for us to have a toast / Let's have a toast for the douche bags / Let's have a toast for the a-holes / Let's have a toast for the scumbags / Every one of them that I know.' The crowd chanted Kanye's name, apparently welcoming him back to pop culture.
