MTV's 'Jersey Shore:' Offensive or reality of a New Jersey shore summer (Videos and Poll)

MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ offensive or reality of the New Jersey shore summer
MTV

MTV premiered its latest reality TV show Thursday night ‘Jersey Shore,’ depicting eight roommates during their summer at the Jersey shore in Seaside Heights. However, the new MTV reality TV show has not only offended many New Jersey residents, but seemingly UNICO National as well.

The eight roommates on 'Jersey Shore' are Nicole “Snooki,” Angelina “Jolie,” Jenni “JWow,” Mike “The Situation,” Ronnie, Sammy “Sweetheart,” Vinnie and DJ Pauly D who used the term ‘Guido’ and ‘Guidette’ numerous times throughout the premiere and UNICO the "Largest Italian American Service Organization in the USA" claims they "can't keep up with the volume of calls" from "outraged" Italian Americans.

While MTV has put out the following statement regarding UNICO and other reactions to the ‘Jersey Shore’ reality TV show premiere, “The show continues MTV’s history of documenting various subcultures, rites of passage of young people, and the ways they self-identify,”…“The Italian-American cast takes pride in their ethnicity. We understand that this show is not intended for every audience and depicts just one aspect of youth culture.”

Did you watch the premiere of ‘Jersey Shore’ if so; do you think it was a typical depiction of what really happens during the summer at the New Jersey shore? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think!

Does it bother anyone else that only one of the roommates is actually FROM New Jersey? The rest are from Rhode Island (1) and New York (everyone else).

  • AboutNewJersey.com 2 years ago

This is NOT the Jersey Shore. MTV took one part of one town in the entire 127 miles of the Jersey Shore and called it the Jersey Shore. They have been promoting the cast as locals - when they are not. The majority are from NY and one from Rhode Island. These people don't even represent the majority of tourists that vacation at the Seaside Heights, let alone the Jersey Shore.

I have lived within 1o miles of where the show was filmed for 30 years. This is in no way a depiction of the Jersey shore. Yes, it does show aspects of living there, but as you can obviously see by the fights that take place, these people are not welcomed warmly. Seaside has a reputation for attracting trashy people, and locals know to stay away during the summer months. It's unfair to pull a bunch of people who don't even live in the state, and say that they represent the area.

  • NJ 2 years ago

these people are so trashy. please keep your clothes on, nobody wants to see naked ugly people thanks

  • rbonnie 2 years ago

what nasty looking kids they are, so funny how they kept calling themselves "hot". i dont even mean the slore outfits or the stupid-looking hair, i mean they have ugly faces. and while the guys have nice bodies, the girls are fat! the only girl who wasnt fat had an awful face though, and that skunk hair! when i was their age i was 100 times hotter and so were my friends, and so was everyone we ever knew! but that's brooklyn, where our italians are goodlooking and so is everyone else.

Wow, this show is wrong on so many levels. It is such a horrible depiction of humanity. New Jersey folks are not like this for the most part and is not good PR for our beautiful Jersey shore! ICK! This show is a joke. Having moved to the West coast and constantly promoting New Jersey to my friends, I was embarassed that anyone watching would think this is what the shore and their wonderful people are like. IT should be banned.

  • Kait 2 years ago

I actually live 3 miles away from the "shore"..it's actually called the beach. This show depicts people that come to the shore, not people that are actually from around here. Dumb guidos/guidettes. They're not what beach people are like, trust me if i was like that i would not be considered a local.

Being from the Jersey Shore myself, I could not resist subjecting myself to this utter filth. I must say that I was absolutely appalled by the wastes of humanity that were portrayed on the program. I sat through the full program, and I honestly felt like I kept watching the same 5 minutes over and over again.

When I was in high school and during my early college years. I used to be jealous of people like this because they seemed to be popular and have everything I wanted. Now, I pity these poor souls. Their lives are bereft of any meaning or purpose. They lack any sense of self. They lack any sense of integrity or emotional depth.

Christina is correct. Seaside is a very nice place to visit. The locals are decent people. Sadly, I avoid the area in the summer because it attracts too many douche bags such as those depicted.

Reality TV is pretty bad as a rule. Ya know, like wallowing in peoples artificial drama as a sport. But aspiring to be a good 'Guido'??? Please!!! I've spent a lot of time at the Jersey Shore over the years and knew a lot of people that worked there for the summer. Thank God the Irish now control the work cuz this bunch is IGNORANT scum! Go pack to some suburb of Philly and stick your head in the gas oven!

  • Not Cool 2 years ago

I'm not even Italian - heck not even American, and I find this show puts a particular ethnic group in a bad light and again, reinforces stereotypes. Shame on MTV.

  • Carl 2 years ago

I grew up there and worked on the Boardwalk in Seaside in the summer 35 years ago at the very beggining of the Guido age. The depiction is absolultely accurate. Those who do not believe it are in denial........those who beleive have seen it in real life and in my case watched it begin and evolve over the years. Go Guidos!!!!!

  • Suzi 2 years ago

Of course the show depicts the Jersey Shore in the summer. We're overrun every year by BENNYs from upstate and outta state. They're rude, vulgar, messy, loud and the locals can't stand them. One of 2 things may happen since this show has aired: 1) These people will finally see how ridiculous they look and change their ways (or at least stop coming down the shore) or 2) We'll be inundated by even more fake-baked jackasses in Ed Hardy shirts next summer because they want to be seen on the show.

BENNYS NEED TO STAY THE HELL HOME!!!!

  • Laura 2 years ago

I have lived at the JS my hole life,I am 33 now and I an tell you this show is a bunch of "bennies" from up north and are an embarrassment to us. There not even from South Jersey! MTV BIG FAIL on this one.

I know this show is an insult to every Italian-AMerican who is intelligent, hard working and has true values that represent- family honor and friends. These "charaters" are very sad examples of the human race. They have no chance in the real work nor do we want them.

  • Mike G. 2 years ago

I am sick and tired of having my state and my shoreline reduced to a portrayal of being a playground for a bunch of self consumed, arrogant, aggressive, crude, polluting, annoying, socially offensive morons of remarkably limited intelligence or class. Do NOT watch this garbage so it goes AWAY.

These People are not Italian in any sense and do not Embody the Italian Culture as MTV claims by stating they are italian americans proud of their Ethnicity ... I would not care if they werent really pushing the controversy by Equating them to Italians.. MTV clearly has ZERO understanding of the Italian Culture. These are American Kids with some italian blood in them Being PHONY in and American wannabee Sub culture. As an italian Immigrant living in NY city I am DEEPLY OFFENDED and have had enough of mass media defaming italian Culure. I also Have been to the Jersey Shore just this last summer and I cant remember the last time i saw one of these ridiculous low forms of humanity.
I hope MTV Fries for this, they have gone way too far.

  • Ashley 2 years ago

you guys are ridiculous. its just a show. get over it

  • chris 2 years ago

Ashley this wouldnt be portrayed this way were it about other ethnic groups the show wouldnt be described as a show about american american Pride..or jewish pride. All they want is the same respect so unless you can proove why one culture doesnt deserve the same respect as the rest .. your comments make you look like a complete bigoted moron.

  • Meg 2 years ago

I live in North Jersey but I grew up at the Jersey Shore my entire life. I was an 80's girl. Yes, we had our fun but your cast looks like a bunch of dirt bags. We are a family now and we have a condo at the Jersey Shore. If my daughter or son grows up like somebody from your cast, I think I would shoot mysef.

  • Meg 2 years ago

I also have one more comment. Is your show even filmed at Seaside Heights? It doesn't look like it to me. If it is, where is Lucky Leo's, The Boardwalk Cafe, Shoot the Geek, etc. I am sorry MTV, but you better get your act together. The Jersey Shore is a special place for us Jerseyians. You make it look something like a joke.

  • getoverit 2 years ago

hey umm all u guys need to stop being a bunch of whiners!! YES all of u may NOT be tanned beefed up gelled up and promiscuous.. buh u know there are alot of italians that are that way .. MTV is just capturing a specific genre of ur race .. they didnt make the show with the intention to anger italian americans and the cast didnt go on the show with the thought of making all of u babies happy.. get oveerr it .. make changes within ur culture if ur gona cry about they way its portrayed. AND to all of u saying that why arent blacks and jews or w/e portrayed in such a bad way .. HELLOOO have u seen some of the stupid shows on TV ?!?!?! EVERY race has their one genre theyre not happy about soo just suck it up and stop giving the show so much publicity if u hate it so much.

  • liz 2 years ago

I agree with Laura. Not one of the cast members is from jersey. I haved lived at the jersey shore my whole life and yes we get alot of people from New York who come here, but if you are going to do a show called "jersey shore" it should be about the people who actually live here...

  • Emily 2 years ago

I'm an Italian-American and even though the people on this show are a little full of themselves, I love this show. People say that this show makes Italian-Americans look bad but if you look like they do its perfectly acceptable to be confident about yourself! They are young unattached adults and of course they are going to act like that, who wouldn't if they got the chance? I don't think any of the people on this show are giving Italian-Americans a bad reputation. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW!!! (especially RONNIE)
