Oh, you have a lot more apologizing to do than this, MTV.
The other night, MTV aired the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, a night celebrating...well, Twilight, really. The entire ceremony seemed to revolve around that particular franchise, with a few segments featuring Tom Cruise as Les Grossman for good measure. Overall, it was a fairly forgettable affair, but one thing definitely stood out: the nearly ten instances wherein someone uttered the "F-word" on-camera, live, without the censors bleeping the offending word in time. It was a glorious day for fans of profanity, but of course those who aren't fond of hearing "F-bombs" dropped all willy-nilly by Peter Facinelli were not amused. Because cable isn't controlled by the FCC as network programming is, there won't be any fines for MTV this year. But, as it turns out, MTV would like to apologize. Read it for yourselves below, my gentle Examiner readers...
Who knows how many lives were shattered when-- on almost ten separate occasions-- the "F-word" was used during MTV's live broadcast of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards? From coast to coast, countless impressionable children had their entire childhoods destroyed by Peter Facinelli and Mark Wahlberg (moreso than usual). Let's see what MTV has to say for themselves about this unforgivable crime:
The MTV Movie Awards is a live televised event known for irreverent comedy and a party atmosphere where our guests speak more freely than they otherwise might. While we aired the live broadcast with a delay, we were unable to mute every word that some might find objectionable. All of these words will be muted in subsequent airings. We sincerely apologize to those in our audience who were offended by any objectionable words that might have slipped by for the live airing."
Well, there you have it: maybe we'll all finally be at peace. My thinking on this is, if you're watching the MTV Movie Awards with a child young enough to be permanently damaged (ahem) by hearing the "F-word" uttered on-screen, perhaps there are other things taking place during that same show that'd be a helluva lot more damaging. You know, like girl-on-girl kissing (allow me to be clear: I am not being critical of this practice and hope that it continues), obviously drunk celebrities wandering around in public, and-- perhaps most horrific of all-- the sight of the Jersey Shore cast. All that's going on, but you're concerned about the swearing?

The outcries that arise whenever this sort of thing happens never fail to stun me. Are we really this offended by bad language? Do parents really believe that kids aren't hearing the "F-word" (among other things) at school, or on the bus, or every time they visit the local strip club? In case you missed it, here's where the whole situation hit critical mass: Peter Facinelli's acceptance speech following Twilight's win for "Best Movie". They've covered the profanity here with bleeps, but you'll get the idea:
We have bizarre standards when it comes to bad language in this country, and it must be tiresome for MTV to have to do this song and dance when they air any number of far more offensive things on an average day's worth of programming. But, whatever: if you were offended, now you've been apologized to. You can sleep again. Just because I have an excuse to run this picture again, here's this:
