Unsurprisingly, Lady Gaga picked up the most awards at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, taking the stage to accept three awards during the show in three different outfits, including a dress made entirely out of meat with matching purse and hat, similar to what she wore on the recent cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. She received the awards for "Best Female Video," "Best Pop Video," and the big award of the night "Video of the Year." Including the technical categories, the singer took home a total of eight awards, breaking a new record for the most amount of moon men won in one night. After receiving the night's last award from Cher, in full "If I Could Turn Back Time" getup, Gaga revealed the name of her next album,"Born This Way," also singing a few bars from one of the songs that seemed to pay tribute to her gay fanbase. Her continued condemnation of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was a theme throughout her speeches and on the red carpet where she was accompanied by servicemen and women who were discharged because of the controversial policy.
The only other multiple winner of the evening was Eminem, who opened the show with a medley of "Not Afraid," and "Love the Way You Lie," featuring a surprise appearance from Rihanna. The rapper picked up the awards for "Best Male Video," and "Best Hip-Hop Video," though he was not on hand to accept them as he had to duck out early to catch a flight right after his performance.
Other winners were Justin Bieber in the fan-voted "Best New Artist" category, and the Jared Leto-led band "30 Second to Mars" for "Best Rock Video."
As rumored, Taylor Swift performed a yet-untitled song about Kanye West and last year's mic-stealing incident that just won't seem to die. While it's good to see the two have apparently buried the hatchet, her performance was unfortunately mostly out of tune, and the lyrical content bordered on self-righteous and condescending. Swift referenced West's age in the song, 32, (at the time of the incident, now he's 33), singing that he's still growing up, and declaring him as an "innocent."
"Thirty-two and still growing up now; who you are is not what you did," she sang. "You're still an innocent." Complete lyrics can be seen here.
Kayne West fared better closing the show with what was arguably the best performance of the night. The rapper performed a new song off of his upcoming album "Dark Twisted Fantasy," titled "Runaway." Backed by a trio of ballerinas and his trusty auto-tune mic, the song was a tongue-in-cheek take on the media's negative perception of him, toasting to all the "douchebags" and other negative labels that many have surely used to describe him at one time or another. The performance was received with a standing ovation followed by the audience chanting his name, showing fans have apparently put the unfortunate incident behind them
"You've been putting up with my sh** too long," he rapped in the song."Let's have a toast for the douchebags/Let's have a toast for the a-holes.../Baby, I've got a plan/Run away as fast as you can." (See the entire performance below).
Other standout performers included up-and-coming rapper Drake with "Fancy" (featuring Mary J. Blige & Swizz Beatz), and Brit pop star Florence + the Machine with a rousing rendition of "Dog Days Are Over."
The awards show was hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler, who seemed eager to be edgy and bring some controversy to the event, but ultimately failed, serving up a series of uninspiring jokes and bits throughout the night instead. In the opening skit she was easily eclipsed by Lindsay Lohan, who managed to poke fun at her own rehab days, and other alcohol-related troubles in a cameo appearance. Handler at one point also jumped in the hot tub with the cast of "Jersey Shore," who were mentioned several times throughout the ceremony.
This year's show was decidedly more low-key with fewer standout moments, but overall solid performances. MTV still has Kanye to thank for actually getting people to tune in and talk about the show the next day.
