The MTA will be receiving some of 92 married-pair Kawasaki M-9 cars before the end of the year and all next year. The cars are part of an order of 584 M-9 cars for the Long Island and Metro North Railroad's and being paid for with funds from a 2010-2014 Capitol Program.
All the M-9 cars will be equipped with Reversible Third Rail Shoes which can be remotely positioned in operation for either the Hudson/Harlem Lines under running style into Grand Central Terminal or the Long Island Railroad overrunning type which will eventually bring LIRR trains into Grand Central from Penn Station after completion of a tunnel between the two stations currently being completed.
The base orders of the M-9's will replace an equal amount of Metro North M-3 and LIRR M-4 cars. The M-9 bodies on the LIRR and MNR differ slightly. The LIRR cars are full versions with the small illuminated white plastic and black number board at front end and Numbered 4400 series while the MNR cars do not have the number boards and have the Black car number painted on the side where number board would be. The MNR cars are 7200 series and are simple and plain and do not have the MTA Blue Stripe below windows as do the New Haven Line M-8 cars with the Orange Stripe below the windows. The Metro North M-9 cars are all plain silver aluminum shells.
