Many San Diego locals and visitors have seen the "round house" near the top of Mt. Helix in San Diego's east county. Living just next door to the unique landmark was long-time La Mesa resident Miles Stepich, the unofficial "mayor" of Mt. Helix. Though he passed away in 2009, his love of Mt. Helix Park and his memory lives on thanks to a fund started by his family and friends to create a trail system throughout the park.
The first phase of the trail project began in late 2010 and is now open to visitors in "raw" form. The quarter mile hiking trail circles the amphitheatre and park, most of it through natural vegetation and all with the spectacular 360 degree San Diego views the park is known for. Work is ongoing and volunteers continue to spruce up the park and new trail system most weekends. The trail will eventually include three view points with benches and interpretive signs highlighting the local flora and fauna.
Mt. Helix Park and Nature Theatre is a privately funded park that is open to the public 365 days per year. Upcoming free events include Sunrise Services on Easter Sunday (April 24th, 2010), East County Earth Day, and the East County Youth Symphony pops concert. Additionally, the annual HeART of Mt Helix not-to-be-missed summer event will take place this year on August 27, 2011, tickets go on sale in June.
